Where Water Meets Land – Vernissage

Mary Gourlay’s work emerges from an emotional and physical immersion in the natural world, responding to the power, fragility, and temporality of landscape. Exploring remote environments by canoe, kayak, and on foot, Gourlay creates sketches, small paintings, and photographs that capture fleeting moments of encounter. These fragmentary records form the basis for larger studio works that distill her lived experience of nature into richly expressive paintings. Since settling in Canada in 1992, her work has been shaped by the landscapes of the Canadian Shield, the south shore of the St. Lawrence near Rimouski, and the Pacific coastline of Vancouver Island.
