SUMMARY:Focus Series
DESCRIPTION:The Focus Series is an ongoing partnership between Library and Archives Canada and the National Gallery of Canada\, building on the rich collections of both institutions. \nFocus on the Métis — A103 Corridor and A103a\nA special collaboration that examines how early images of the Métis are often misidentified or not referenced at all. A careful look at details in historical art and photographs reveals that the Métis are often “hiding in plain sight.” \nPictorialism — A104a\nThe predominant aesthetic in photography throughout the first half of the twentieth century was pictorialism. \nWork is art/Art is work — A109a\nThis installation examines the various ways artists responded to the critical issues of the Depression era. \nPoints of View: Photography in the North — A111a\nDocumentary photographer Pamela Harris recorded community life in Taloyoak\, Nunavut (then Spence Bay\, NWT) for three months in 1972 and 1973 (published as Another Way of Being). Her photographs appear both casual and staged\, the resulting photographic sessions respectfully engaging two cultures and important considerations such as the agency and self-representation of Inuit.

SUMMARY:Grand Nord - Valérian Mazataud
DESCRIPTION:Le photographe Valérian Mazataud a recréé\, avec des citoyens de son quartier de Montréal-Nord\, des scènes de la vie quotidienne d’autrefois. Il a fouillé des archives photographiques et des albums de famille pour ensuite\, lors d’ateliers\, reconstituer ces photos en imaginant un univers à la croisée des époques et des cultures. \nPrès d’une centaine de participants – originaires du Québec\, d’Haïti\, du Salvador ou de la Turquie – ont contribué à ce processus de co-création. Il en résulte une série de diptyques où passé et présent se répondent\, révélant autant l’évolution du Québec urbain que le regard des nouveaux arrivants sur leur société d’accueil. \nNous vous invitons en grand nombre au vernissage de l’exposition qui aura lieu le vendredi\, 10 avril 2026\, de 19 h à 21 h. SUMMARY:Tim desClouds + Pat Durr
DESCRIPTION:Tim desClouds – Artist Statement \nIn this most recent body of works I have pared down my working process to a celebration of the tradition of drawing and painting leaving behind the many sculptural embellishments included in earlier works. The content of the works flow forward from my previous 2022 exhibition\, “Somewhere Between Mother Goose and Foucault”\, and 2024 exhibition “Heavy Rhymes\, Lightly Tossed” \nI have worked new iconography into my pieces. By referencing my love for philosophy and the many quirky nursery rhymes I have read to my daughter and more recently my grandsons\, I have found a whimsical middle ground for my works. Ironically many of the concepts within these stories parallel and overlap each other. As a lifelong student of media\, culture\, and philosophy\, playing with these narratives has allowed me to inject newfound interest and excitement into the art process and final products. \nThese works are materializations of my everyday life— thoughts\, feelings\, actions\, and interactions—and they help to weave a landscape of our shared existence. I imagine each work as a physical space where the viewer may stop in\, think\, discuss\, and depart freely. The viewer is given the opportunity to invest interest and imagination\, and to make what had once appeared incomprehensible\, comprehensible and personally meaningful. \nAbout the Artist \nTim desClouds is an Ottawa-based artist\, born in Montreal and raised in Ottawa. He has been an educator\, and arts advocate for well over 40 years. He has served on both the Ottawa Art Gallery and Gallery Saw Board of Directors. Tim retired from a 30 year teaching career at Canterbury High School Regional Programme for the Arts within the district of the Ottawa – Carleton Board of Education. He has created numerous public art works throughout Ontario and Quebec\, and his work has been acquired for numerous corporate\, private and government collections throughout North America. \nPat Durr – Artist Statement \nIt has been my good fortune to be an active practicing artist for over 45 years.  During that time I have tried to positively contribute to the world I live and work in by giving workshops and lectures in Ottawa and across the country. \nMy current artworks are concerned with the worlds which surround me\, both the natural and the urban – industrial. These landscapes have consistently been a reference source for my art. To this end\, I have accumulated cast-off objects from my surroundings – the artistic\, natural\, and industrial waste which I then reference in my artworks to probe the relationship between our actions and the natural world. \nMy artworks allude to often problematic and unfortunate negative interfaces with our environment.  Yet\, also central to my art is a celebration of the complexity of life\, as well as an exploration of this interplay between life and its complexities.  Most of my recently created pieces reflect my response to the pandemic and to my positive hopes for the future.  While the imagery is primarily abstract\, it is often infused with hints of recognizable objects and can echo images found in my earlier prints and paintings. \nI feel that the cyclic aspects of growth\, extinction and renewal are symbolic of my own often chaotic experience of existence. \nAbout the Artist \nDurr has been an active practicioner of art for over 45 years. During those years\, she has tried to positively contribute to the world she lives and works in by giving workshops and lectures across the country\, and by working with national organizations and advising the federal government on issues that directly affect Canadian visual artists. \nDurr’s solo exhibitions of paintings\, drawings and prints have been shown in public and private galleries and artist-run centers across Canada and the United States.  Her artworks are in public\, private and corporate collections in Canada\, United States\, Australia\, England\, Cuba and Israel.  She has received numerous awards and grants through-out her long career.

SUMMARY:Jane Languedoc - Solo Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Jane Languedoc was born in Ottawa\, and living on the edge of the Canadian Shield\, the landscapes that surrounded her inspired her deep love of trees\, rocks and lakes.  She moved to London\, England in 1976 and was exposed to an entirely different life. Her frequent visits to the National Gallery gave her a love of impressionism and she took many summer trips to Wales and saw a very different landscape and learned to love the ocean and cliffs of Pembrokeshire. She longed for the fresh air and cool lakes of home and returned to Canada in 1980. \nJane has learnt from local professional artists\, such as Adrian Baker\, and many online programs such as Will Kemp art and Acrylic University. She loves bright colours and uses them to portray emotions. She feels that each season has a unique mood and paints each season as it occurs. She has traveled all over the US \,Canada and Europe and been moved by the wonderful variety that nature creates with light\, weather and flora. The awe of our wonderful planet is a never ending inspiration.
