SUMMARY:Focus Series
DESCRIPTION:The Focus Series is an ongoing partnership between Library and Archives Canada and the National Gallery of Canada\, building on the rich collections of both institutions. \nFocus on the Métis — A103 Corridor and A103a\nA special collaboration that examines how early images of the Métis are often misidentified or not referenced at all. A careful look at details in historical art and photographs reveals that the Métis are often “hiding in plain sight.” \nPictorialism — A104a\nThe predominant aesthetic in photography throughout the first half of the twentieth century was pictorialism. \nWork is art/Art is work — A109a\nThis installation examines the various ways artists responded to the critical issues of the Depression era. \nPoints of View: Photography in the North — A111a\nDocumentary photographer Pamela Harris recorded community life in Taloyoak\, Nunavut (then Spence Bay\, NWT) for three months in 1972 and 1973 (published as Another Way of Being). Her photographs appear both casual and staged\, the resulting photographic sessions respectfully engaging two cultures and important considerations such as the agency and self-representation of Inuit.

SUMMARY:Grand Nord - Valérian Mazataud
DESCRIPTION:Le photographe Valérian Mazataud a recréé\, avec des citoyens de son quartier de Montréal-Nord\, des scènes de la vie quotidienne d’autrefois. Il a fouillé des archives photographiques et des albums de famille pour ensuite\, lors d’ateliers\, reconstituer ces photos en imaginant un univers à la croisée des époques et des cultures. \nPrès d’une centaine de participants – originaires du Québec\, d’Haïti\, du Salvador ou de la Turquie – ont contribué à ce processus de co-création. Il en résulte une série de diptyques où passé et présent se répondent\, révélant autant l’évolution du Québec urbain que le regard des nouveaux arrivants sur leur société d’accueil. \nNous vous invitons en grand nombre au vernissage de l’exposition qui aura lieu le vendredi\, 10 avril 2026\, de 19 h à 21 h. SUMMARY:Jane Languedoc - Solo Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Jane Languedoc was born in Ottawa\, and living on the edge of the Canadian Shield\, the landscapes that surrounded her inspired her deep love of trees\, rocks and lakes.  She moved to London\, England in 1976 and was exposed to an entirely different life. Her frequent visits to the National Gallery gave her a love of impressionism and she took many summer trips to Wales and saw a very different landscape and learned to love the ocean and cliffs of Pembrokeshire. She longed for the fresh air and cool lakes of home and returned to Canada in 1980. \nJane has learnt from local professional artists\, such as Adrian Baker\, and many online programs such as Will Kemp art and Acrylic University. She loves bright colours and uses them to portray emotions. She feels that each season has a unique mood and paints each season as it occurs. She has traveled all over the US \,Canada and Europe and been moved by the wonderful variety that nature creates with light\, weather and flora. The awe of our wonderful planet is a never ending inspiration.

SUMMARY:Bryna Cohen SPRING
DESCRIPTION:Bryna Cohen – Artist Statement \nPainting remains central to my practice\, even within the vast range of contemporary art. It is how I chose to express the beauty I see. Flora and vegetation have their own allure and vitality. Each painting begins with an emotional or sensory response to nature and evolves gradually on the canvas. Through layers of colour and careful reworking\, the image emerges over time\, allowing the original impulse to find clarity and voice. \nI use a wide tonal range of greens in my work- the colour of growth\, verdant life\, and hope. Illuminating the greens are the bright contrasting colours of flowers. The complex paths of intertwining\, stems or roots\, and foliage\, interspersed with vivid color\, create movement and growth. \nWhether flowers are contained in a vase or moving freely in space\, my goal is to capture the energy\, beauty and resilience of nature. \nAbout the Artist \nBorn in Montreal\, Bryna Polonsky Cohen has been a professional artist and art educator for more than 40 years. Having graduated from both McGill University in Arts and the University of Ottawa in Fine Arts\, Bryna has had extensive studio education. In 1970-71 she was accepted to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design\, as well as having studied at the University of Michigan and at The American Center for Students and Artists in Paris. \nHer work is in the Collections of the City of Ottawa\, Global Affairs Canada\, and the Canada Council Art Bank\, as well as corporate and private collections including that of the late distinguished artist Mary Pratt. This is her 18th solo exhibition since 1992. As an active member of the Ottawa arts community\, Bryna was an art educator at The National Gallery of Canada\, an art instructor at the Ottawa School of Art\, and a founding member of the not-for-profit Ottawa lab ArtEngine.
