SUMMARY:Maryline Lemaitre A Fresh Start - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:Lemaitre Bio \n“My love affair with creation was born in Asia while I lived in Hong Kong and then Singapore with my family. Different art classes introduced me to paints and traditional tools but it is in the experimentation and mixing of techniques that I have developed my creative process which combines collage- décollage\, acrylic paint and so-called\, as rightly so\, “mixed media.” \nMy pictorial approach can be summed up in one word: Serendipity: Find by chance what you are not looking for! Facing the white canvas\, I never know where I am going. I am working in the present moment. All it takes is one image\, one vintage photograph or an old piece of paper or fabric to ignite my imagination and make me follow a intuitive approach for a while. It is why I often work in series. There is a desire to create a universe that speaks of memory\, of childhood and the passing of time\, of nostalgia\, poetry\, mystery or humour depending on the days.”

SUMMARY:Envol by Alix Parisien - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:Galerie Old Chelsea is delighted to host a second exhibition by Alix Parisien\, an Outaouais artist who paints in a primitive style. Bold\, exuberant\, fresh\, pared-down shapes\, are words that describe her art well.   Says Alix “When you are a bit different\, you have to find other ways to realize your potential and achieve your goals. I am a young woman with Down syndrome. I don’t like to talk about that\, but you have to know this.” \nAlix’s journey was not easy.  She would have liked to study art at the college or at the university level\, but she was not accepted. So she followed her own path. She participated in art camps at the National Art Gallery to develop her artistic talent.  She also took courses with the City of Gatineau and with professional artists. \n“I like to paint animals\, the river\, water\, but especially birds\, they are free” Alix tells us. “Climate change worries me a lot\, so I paint my Nature. My first solo exhibition was five years ago at Galerie Old Chelsea. It was fun to meet all kinds of people. It encourages me to continue. I also participated in a group exhibition at the Maison de la Culture de Gatineau and a solo exhibition at the EspaceCulturel in Cantley”. \n“I like to paint\, I need to paint and I paint every day. I have a slightly naive style but not quite. I think it’s an original style.  I find that it is reminiscent of Aboriginal or Scandinavian art with all the bright colours that I use. Maybe it’s a Down syndrome style\, it’s my little extra chromosome that makes my art unique.”

SUMMARY:Unprecedented Moments by Nancy Brandsma
DESCRIPTION:“My work is a careful study of bodily movement and human thought. Every day\, countless beautiful thoughts and ideas pass through our consciousness without ever being captured or recorded. The same can be said for every little movement of our bodies. We often judge ourselves for the things we say and do in front of others\, but we fail to pay attention to the myriad of tiny\, yet remarkable\, moments we experience in private every day. \nMy work is the result of pure and instinctive authenticity\, it is never determined in advance and is always completed in a single session. Each mark I carve on my canvas is a living testimony of the precise moment etched in the paint. The works are mostly monochrome\, in an attempt to conceal the myriad thoughts that control my mind and soul at any given moment. Having struggled with attention deficit disorder for most of my life\, I have come to realize that it is fantastic to be different and that our essence should be captured as a sublime landscape. \nThe proposed exhibition project brings together the works that have captured my daily authenticity throughout these last years. The viewer will have the opportunity to reflect and question his or her own experience by creating points of convergence with the works.” – Nancy Brandsma

SUMMARY:Retold Prototypes Without a Story by Adrian For
DESCRIPTION:The Ottawa School of Art ByWard Market Campus is proud to present ‘Retold Prototypes Without a Story’ an exhibition of works by Adrian Gor. This exhibition is on display from Monday January 6 to Sunday February 2\, 2025\, in the J.W. Stellick Gallery located on the main floor of the Downtown Campus at 35 George St.\, in the ByWard Market. \n“Retold Prototypes Without a Story” examines masculine identity through drawings and prints\, reimagining both historical and contemporary figures. Adrian Gor challenges traditional masculinity by blending classical anatomy\, medieval symbolism\, and modern elements like shopping carts and drones. \nAn Ottawa-based artist\, Gor is known for his figurative pastel drawings on paper and linen\, as well as relief prints and etchings. His work delves into the psychological and cultural aspects of masculinity\, questioning values such as strength\, rationality\, and virility. He reinterprets traditional and symbolic representations of the human figure\, drawing from classical\, medieval\, and postmodern critiques of technology and capitalism\, alongside personal experiences. \nGor holds an MFA from the University of Windsor and a PhD in Art History and Philosophy from Concordia University. He teaches Art History and Foundation Drawing at the Ottawa School of Art\, where he also serves as Diploma Coordinator. His research explores connections between contemporary art\, modern art\, and medieval theology\, with publications in SAGE Journals\, Journal of Religion and Culture\, and the New Europe College Ştefan Odobleja Program Yearbook (2017). Notable past exhibitions include the Tonitza Gallery in Romania (2023)\, OSA Gallery at Shenkman Arts Centre (2022)\, and ARTSPLACE Gallery in Nova Scotia (2021).

SUMMARY:Through the Ground Glass: Reframing William James Topley
DESCRIPTION:Through the Ground Glass explores a dialogue between the historical work of Ottawa photographer William James Topley and the practices of six contemporary artists: Lori Blondeau\, Chun Hua Catherine Dong\, Anique Jordan\, Neeko Paluzzi\, Adrian Stimson\, and Geneviève Thauvette. These artists engage with image manipulation\, hauntology\, costumes\, and theatricality to challenge established narratives and reclaim agency through portraiture. \nTopley’s innovative use of the composite technique\, similar to cut-and-paste collage\, highlights photography’s power to construct compelling stories. In parallel\, the contemporary artists in this exhibition draw on this principle to resist\, deconstruct\, and critique existing frameworks\, creating works that envision and catalyze new possibilities for identity and representation.
