SUMMARY:Les secrets du vent\, Anne-Yvonne Jouan - Vernissage

SUMMARY:Paysager\, Émilie Rondeau - Vernissage

SUMMARY:Wilderness Stories by Dawn McArthur
DESCRIPTION:Galerie Old Chelsea is thrilled to announce its latest exhibition featuring the works of Dawn McArthur\, a unique visual storyteller and wilderness artist\, known for her evocative acrylic paintings that capture the vibrant essence of the Quebec wilderness. The exhibition will showcase McArthur’s unique approach to art\, blending storytelling\, symbolism\, and a deep connection to nature. \nMcArthur’s work is inspired by the stunning landscapes of Quebec\, where she finds inspiration in the wild beauty that surrounds her. Through her expressive paintings\, McArthur celebrates “The Wild” with playful optimism\, reflecting her personal outlook on life. Each piece is a testament to her belief in the power of art to connect people to the natural world\, both consciously and subconsciously. \n“Storytelling and symbolism are key components to my art\,” says McArthur. “My paintings are about more than just the image—they are an invitation to reflect on our relationship with nature. Through the use of colour-play\, strong lines\, and composition\, I aim to create harmony and balance that guides the viewer through a story of the wilderness.” \nInfluenced by renowned artists such as Chagall\, Seurat\, Morisseau\, Klimt\, and Franz Marc\, McArthur’s style merges realism and surrealism\, using bold\, black lines to outline her subjects and add energy\, balance\, and focus to her work. The distinct brush strokes of color within her landscapes contrast with the realistic depiction of wildlife\, bringing an element of surrealism that invites the viewer to see the natural world in a new light. In her paintings\, even fish in the deep waters are fully visible\, challenging the boundaries between reality and imagination. \nMcArthur’s vibrant palette\, rich textures\, and thoughtful compositions encourage the viewer to step into the scene and experience the wilderness in all its beauty. The stories embedded within each painting reflect McArthur’s personal mandate: to instill a sense of wonder and a desire to protect the natural world. \nThis exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience McArthur’s deep love for the Quebec wilderness and her vision for preserving it through art. Galerie Old Chelsea invites art lovers and nature enthusiasts alike to join us for the opening and explore the vivid landscapes and captivating stories that McArthur so masterfully brings to life.

In addition to these traditional mediums\, some of the artists also work with photo-based art\, pastel\, encaustics\, mosaics\, ink\, and printmaking. \nOne long-time artist\, Marie Léger\, has been with Art Lending for many years and is currently exploring encaustics. SUMMARY:People in places with things by Mike Minor - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:I am enthralled by the human animal and its stubbornly consistent spirit\, timelessly emotional conditions\, and varied environments. My paintings build humbly on works of traditional painters laid down through the millennium. I want to tell timeless stories with my pictures and leave them to the collective whole of works.  In this exhibit\, I explore people\, places\, and things.  In each piece—figurative work\, portraits\, landscapes\, and still life paintings—I express on the canvas thoughts I cannot convey in words.\n There will be an opening reception (or vernissage) at the Gallery from 1:00-4:00 PM\, Saturday 1 March. You are all invited and welcome.

SUMMARY:From Her Hands - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition From Her Hands pays tribute to women and the essential roles they play in creating a generous\, loving\, and hopeful world. Using the universal symbol of the hand\, the paintings celebrate women of all ages\, genders\, cultures\, and abilities. \nThe works explore the everyday lives of women\, showcasing a range of gestures—from professional tasks to mundane\, repetitive\, affectionate\, or intimate actions. Some gestures are automatic\, others precise\, but all reveal deeply personal\, caring experiences. Viewers are invited to reflect on the often-overlooked importance of our hands\, which are central to our life stories. \nDisplayed in a simple\, minimalist linear arrangement\, the paintings encourage a close\, intimate viewing experience\, highlighting the equality of all the women depicted.

SUMMARY:Valerie Ryan Drawing with the Brush - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:Ryan Artist Statement\nReviewing my old sketchbooks\, I discovered a comment made by one of my teacher’s that I had an energetic hand!  That comment made me laugh and encouraged me to continue working outdoors exploring the landscape. Outside\, the strokes seem to both describe the form and give it colour. Outlines disappear. The brushwork is loose and almost abstract\, yet it still has integrity and describe the forms. It is a balancing act that at times can be difficult out in the elements. I have been working smaller outdoors.  The smaller paintings are a good aid to working larger in the studio. In the early dark months of winter\, flowers have been the subject of choice. \nRyan Bio \nValerie Ryan completed a B.F.A (Queen’s University) and a M.F.A. (University of Saskatchewan). She attended many Emma Lake Artists workshops through the 1980’s. It was there that she felt free to paint outdoors and explore loose brushwork and colour. A practice she has continued for over 40 years. She taught at the National Gallery of Canada and the Ottawa School of Art. Her paintings are in many corporate and private collections.

SUMMARY:Maryline Lemaitre A Fresh Start - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:Lemaitre Bio \n“My love affair with creation was born in Asia while I lived in Hong Kong and then Singapore with my family. Different art classes introduced me to paints and traditional tools but it is in the experimentation and mixing of techniques that I have developed my creative process which combines collage- décollage\, acrylic paint and so-called\, as rightly so\, “mixed media.” \nMy pictorial approach can be summed up in one word: Serendipity: Find by chance what you are not looking for! Facing the white canvas\, I never know where I am going. I am working in the present moment. All it takes is one image\, one vintage photograph or an old piece of paper or fabric to ignite my imagination and make me follow a intuitive approach for a while. It is why I often work in series. There is a desire to create a universe that speaks of memory\, of childhood and the passing of time\, of nostalgia\, poetry\, mystery or humour depending on the days.”

SUMMARY:Envol by Alix Parisien - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:Galerie Old Chelsea is delighted to host a second exhibition by Alix Parisien\, an Outaouais artist who paints in a primitive style. Bold\, exuberant\, fresh\, pared-down shapes\, are words that describe her art well.   Says Alix “When you are a bit different\, you have to find other ways to realize your potential and achieve your goals. I am a young woman with Down syndrome. I don’t like to talk about that\, but you have to know this.” \nAlix’s journey was not easy.  She would have liked to study art at the college or at the university level\, but she was not accepted. So she followed her own path. She participated in art camps at the National Art Gallery to develop her artistic talent.  She also took courses with the City of Gatineau and with professional artists. \n“I like to paint animals\, the river\, water\, but especially birds\, they are free” Alix tells us. “Climate change worries me a lot\, so I paint my Nature. My first solo exhibition was five years ago at Galerie Old Chelsea. It was fun to meet all kinds of people. It encourages me to continue. I also participated in a group exhibition at the Maison de la Culture de Gatineau and a solo exhibition at the EspaceCulturel in Cantley”. \n“I like to paint\, I need to paint and I paint every day. I have a slightly naive style but not quite. I think it’s an original style.  I find that it is reminiscent of Aboriginal or Scandinavian art with all the bright colours that I use. Maybe it’s a Down syndrome style\, it’s my little extra chromosome that makes my art unique.”
