SUMMARY:Florence Victor Fairy Tales and Other Stories - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:Everyone’s life is worth telling. We all have a story whose chapters address various subjects: fears\, doubts\, moral dilemmas\, obstacles\, but also encounters\, friendship and love. In fairy tales\, the perilous forest journey allows the main character to mature\, enriched by trials and life lessons\, and by the friendships forged along the way (see B. Bettelheim\, The Use of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales\, 1976). In my personal narrative\, the cities of New York and Berlin become\, in turn\, this forest\, a place of passage and learning. \nThis is the premise of this exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:Galerie Old Chelsea is pleased to present the artworks by the art students from Symmes School and D’Arcy McGee High School in Aylmer. About ten years ago\, Galerie Old Chelsea approached a local Chelsea school to invite them to work on art during the year\, culminating with an exhibit at the Galerie.  Both the kids and the teacher were very enthusiastic\, and we’ve been giving the opportunity to other schools ever since. \nThis year\, we are delighted to showcase the art by Symmes Junior (Grades 7–8) and D’Arcy McGee High School (Grade 9) in Aylmer\, Quebec. Their teacher\,  Heawon Chun\, tells us that the works span a variety of materials and processes\, including drawing\, mixed media\, collage\, painting and needle felting. Students were guided to work creatively while learning techniques that help them build confidence and skill with each medium. \nThe works on display celebrate their commitment\, imagination\, and hard work. Please join us in congratulating these young artists on their beautiful accomplishments.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth D’Agostino\, Kelly McDonald\, and Ava Roth
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we are featuring three artists whose practices engage deeply with natural materials and ecosystems: Elizabeth D’Agostino\, Kelly McDonald\, and Ava Roth. \nElizabeth D’Agostino\nCanadian artist Elizabeth D’Agostino works across print media\, sculpture\, and installation\, drawing inspiration from the rich complexity of Canadian flora and fauna and the delicate relationships between organisms and their environments. Her finely detailed etchings and mixed-media works often blur the boundary between plant and animal forms\, generating imagined ecosystems that reflect on biodiversity and ecological transformation. \nKelly McDonald\nOttawa-based photo-based artist Kelly McDonald creates contemplative botanical work that resonates with her personal experience living with Parkinson’s disease. In her Relics series\, McDonald photographs locally sourced plant specimens at various stages of decay\, printing the images on delicate washi paper. These works reflect both the lifecycle of the botanicals and the evolving physical experience of the artist\, acknowledging loss and resilience while honoring the beauty of each form. \nAva Roth\nToronto-based artist Ava Roth’s interdisciplinary work spans encaustic painting\, embroidery\, weaving\, and natural materials. In her Honeycomb Collection (often referred to in relation to her Honeybee Collaboration works)\, Roth places art objects into beehives where honeybees build honeycomb around them\, resulting in pieces that emerge from an interspecies collaboration. This body of work explores profound relationships between humans and the natural environment\, highlighting the creative agency of non-human collaborators.

SUMMARY:Julie Beauchemin Mirrors
DESCRIPTION:My practice is grounded in abstract painting as a form of narrative construction. I approach painting as a language system\, where mark-making functions as syntax and movement across the surface reveals relationships between space\, time\, and gesture. Through layered processes of application\, erasure\, and accumulation\, my work navigates between intuition and deliberateness\, order and disruption. \nWorking primarily with mixed media on canvas\, I employ acrylic paint\, oil pastels\, spray paint\, inks\, and unconventional materials. These elements are applied through dense\, tactile passages and thin\, diluted washes\, allowing the history of the process to remain visible. While the work may initially suggest immediacy or spontaneity\, it is guided by sustained attention to composition\, colour\, rhythm\, and material interaction. \nMy paintings draw from street-based mark-making\, narrative painting\, and art-historical conventions\, positioning these references within a single visual field. I am interested in how gestures associated with immediacy and informality can coexist with formal painterly structure. Acts of scratching\, wiping\, and reworking are integral to the process\, introducing cycles of destruction and reconstruction that guide each painting toward resolution. \nBy working with multiple media and defragmenting established conventions\, my practice proposes a metalinguistic approach to painting—one that embraces contradiction\, physical presence\, and the visibility of process as essential components of meaning. \nMirrors serves as a conceptual lens for this body of work\, extending beyond literal reflection to consider how experience\, perception\, emotion\, and interaction are mirrored through the act of painting. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together works created at moments of transition—a threshold between one place\, one inner state\, and another. Some paintings were born out of fleeting but deeply inspiring encounters\, brief connections that sparked creative momentum of rare intensity. Others\, more silent\, bear the mark of an intimate transition from one place to another. \nThe exhibition is an invitation to explore these passages\, those that connect\, those that separate\, those that transform. To feel the beauty of what appears\, what dissolves\, and what remains. My work revolves around the imprint left by these passages that shape our relationship with the world. \nJean-François Provost holds a degree in visual arts from the University of Quebec in Outaouais. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited in Canada\, the United States\, and Europe. He has received several awards and honours for his work as a painter. His works can be found in several collections\, including those of Loto-Québec\, Global Affairs Canada\, Provigo\, the City of Ottawa\, the City of Gatineau\, CitiFinancial\, Brookfield Energy\, as well as in numerous corporate and private collections in the United States\, Canada\, Europe\, and the Middle East. He is represented by Galerie St-Laurent + Hill and Galerie de Bellefeuille.

SUMMARY:Winter Count: Embracing the Cold - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:Featuring more than 150 works from the early 19th century to the present\, this exhibition brings together Indigenous\, Canadian settler and European perspectives on the subject. \nWinter Count delves into concepts of tradition\, identity and heritage as it explores how individual artists engage with winter motifs through objects\, paintings\, sculpture and works on paper. Historic Indigenous belongings are juxtaposed with works by contemporary artists like Inuit printmaker Pitseolak Ashoona and Cree artists Duane Linklater and Kent Monkman\, highlighting ancestral knowledge\, storytelling and contemporary critique. The exhibition then draws comparisons between Canadian painters such as Maurice Cullen and Clarence Gagnon and French Impressionists Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro\, focusing on their distinct approaches to capturing the effects of light on snow. Finally\, it reveals a shared visual language among Canadian artists like J.E.H. MacDonald and Lawren S. Harris and their Canadian and Scandinavian counterparts through the lens of winter. \nNamed for the pictorial records used by Indigenous nations from the Plains like the Lakota\, Winter Countreflects on themes of survival\, adaptation and kinship\, portraying winter as a transformative force that shapes human experience. \nThis exhibition is a collaboration between the departments of Indigenous Ways and Decolonization\, Canadian Art and European\, American and Asian art.

SUMMARY:An Nguyen\, "Fortune" Solo Exhibition - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement\n\n\n\n\nAs immigrants entering a foreign land\, we all share the common desire to make our new country a place we can freely call home. We make efforts\, from bringing our culinary traditions\, to running enterprises that shape a nation’s economic future. As newcomers we do so with innovation\, grit and determination. Our journeys to freedom are often fought with challenges\, sacrifice\, and difficult decisions. \nApril 30th\, 2025 marks the 50th anniversary since the fall of Saigon. The Canadian government recognizes this day as a national day to commemorate the large exodus of Vietnamese refugees and their acceptance into Canada. Through art\, I bear witness to this historical event by creating a series of paintings\,  which illustrates the story of my refugee beginnings and celebrates how far I’ve come. My vivid paintings chronicle the perilous journey of leaving Vietnam to stories of life as an Canadian immigrant. \nDuring the Vietnam war\, my parents lived through the trauma of hearing constant gunshots while watching the skies engulfed in flames. They heard cries of those lost at sea and witnessed children die in the arms of their parents. They saw the desperate who tossed their offspring onto precarious vessels in  the hopes that their child might find potential refuge. These memories are etched in their hearts and forever changed their view on life and parenting. \nMy brother and I grew up in a home grounded in traditional values situated within a typical Canadian milieu. Growing up\, most of what we learned about the Vietnam War was through our parents. My parents taught us how to cook old family recipes so that we remember where we came from\, while watching Wheel of Fortune. They planted flowers to beautify our home\, while cultivating basil and chili plants for aromatic dishes. As stoic survivors of war\, they cried when I graduated from university. They decorated the house in “lucky” red to affirm their happiness during my tea ceremony\, and shared laughter and joy when I danced at my wedding. They are changemakers who bravely risked everything so that we could live in safety to pursue our hopes and dreams. As a child of these war heroes\, I honour their valour and courage in the face of such seemingly insurmountable adversity. \nThis exhibition showcases\, how my road to a bright future\, was  founded on decades of personal sacrifices and hardship. For many Vietnamese Boat People\, crossing the tumultuous South China Sea was a huge risk. Like many immigrant families our origins were humble\, but overtime we have made substantial contributions to our communities\, while preserving our heritage and customs. It is my hope that this exposition celebrates the half-century of achievements of the Vietnamese diaspora and the triumphs we have made in the face of adversity. Let this show be a beacon of light that shines luck on those who today make similar perilous journeys. Join us for an exciting afternoon tea party complete with an assortment of teas and baked goods. Be among the first to see the reveal of Bhat’s latest painting: National Capital Legacy – measuring an impressive 9 ft x 9 ft! \nThis is an ‘open-house’ style event\, so feel free to just drop by anytime between 12pm to 4pm at the Salon Des Bananes on Carling Ave. to be among the first to see this art piece! \nThe National Capital Legacy art piece was commissioned by the National Capital Commission for its 125th anniversary\, and will be displayed in the public area of the NCC’s new headquarters at 80 Elgin Street. \nBhat Boy’s Story\nI think of myself as a painter and author\, in that order. I was born at my grandparent’s house in London\, England\, in 1965 and immigrated to Canada on a steam ship in 1966. It was a rough crossing\, and my mother later told me that the stewards fought to look after me as all I did was sleep to the rocking of the ship. My father met us in Montreal and I settled down with my parents in the Nation’s Capital\, one a cleaning lady the other a spy. \nAfter a colorful gap year in Europe\, I returned to Canada to attend the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto disguised as mild-mannered Ian Van Lock and studied Fine Arts. The program included a year in Florence\, Italy\, where I was introduced to the magic of the Renaissance. \nAfter graduating\, I worked for Barclays Bank and in 1992 I narrowly escaped death in a terrorist attack on my workplace when a bomb was detonated in my building. This life-changing event made me decide to pursue my art career full time. The now famous Gherkin is where my former workplace was destroyed\, a monument to my decision. It is today one of the City of London’s most iconic modern buildings. \nThroughout the 1990s I traveled with rolled up paintings\, selling work in the United States\, Britain\, Switzerland and the Netherlands. During this time\, I had exhibitions in Florence\, San Francisco\, London\, New York\, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. By the year 2000\, my work could be found on every continent but Antarctica. \nSince settling in Ottawa\, Canada\, I have completed numerous public commissions and established Art in the Park\, now the New Art Festival. This annual art festival has grown to become Eastern Ontario’s largest and recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. \nI am driven to create paintings\, drawings and books. My work stays forever young. I want others to be able to see what I can see; that is my gift to the world. \nI live with my husband and four cats in Ottawa\, Canada. My hobbies include traveling by ship\, mapmaking\, and drinking tea. I am never bored.
