SUMMARY:Rachel Kalpana JAMES Bright Oriental Star
DESCRIPTION:Dialogue between contemporary and historical art offers fresh perspectives on the past\, and in this exhibition\, South-Asian Canadian artist Rachel Kalpana James creates an immersive installation that illuminates a pivotal moment of East-West interaction in the early 20th century. Her work centers on Rabindranath Tagore’s 1929 visit to Canada. A renowned Indian poet and philosopher\, Tagore’s ideas on spirituality and nature resonated deeply with audiences worldwide. While the impact of his visit on Canadian artists\, particularly members of the Group of Seven such as Lawren S. Harris and Frederick Varley\, has been largely overlooked\, James’ installation offers a space to reconsider this overlooked influence. \nThrough a dynamic interplay of media\, James pairs stylized footage of foliage with text from Tagore’s poetry and newspaper clippings documenting his Canadian visit. The pulsating words on screen\, evocative of a heartbeat or a newsreel\, create a sense of urgency and immediacy. Distorted images of iconic Canadian landscapes—reminiscent of Group of Seven works—subtly challenge the established artistic narrative. Projected onto a chalked background\, the installation navigates the space between documentary and imagination\, blurring the boundaries between history and fiction. By inviting viewers to question how history is shaped and perceived\, James’ work encourages a critical re-examination of the complex relationship between colonial and national narratives in Canadian art.

SUMMARY:Paysager\, Émilie Rondeau

SUMMARY:Les secrets du vent\, Anne-Yvonne Jouan

SUMMARY:Terra : The Good Earth by Olga Kay-Grigoriev and Erin Thibault
DESCRIPTION:Galerie Old Chelsea is pleased to present the art by two of ten Galerie Old Chelsea’s owners\, Erin Thibault & Olga Kay-Grigoriev who are excited to share their love of the natural world. Whether it’s the light cascading through the trees\, as Erin captures in her paintings\, or the subtle details of a single leaf carved out of wood by Olga\, both artists give homage to the beauty of nature that is all around us in the Gatineau Hills. \nErin’s work is inspired by her deep connection to nature\, to wild spaces and\nto the natural world around her. Her paintings are rather dreamy\, as she paints the essence of the subject rather than its exacting details.  As Picasso famously said…” I begin with an idea and it becomes something else”. Erin’s works will often start with a particular scene and at a certain point will organically shift into an entirely different image. She allows whatever is claiming the canvas to do so\, letting go of the reigns and allowing the essential to come through. She can often see it emerging and flows with it.  She considers herself an intuitive painter\, working in an impressionist style. \nFollowing a fulfilling career in education\, Olga turned to wood sculpture as a new way of artistic expression. She trained first with a fellow artist to discover the potential of various mechanical and hand-carving tools\, then took courses in sculpture in Florence\, Italy\, and also life drawing at the Ottawa School of Art\, Olga now spends time in her Quebec studio putting the learning to practice in a process of playful experimentation as new ideas come to mind. \nShe enjoys working with wood as it evokes a banquet of sensory stimulation and a warmth only nature can convey. Carving is a satisfying process which offers sufficient challenge and risk to keep her interest. Olga’s material comes from fallen trees on her property or from the surrounding Gatineau Hills. Her muse is the journey of life\, through love and loss\, joy and sorrow and all the stories in between. Animals\, people and objects in nature are the subject of her work. Her pieces reside in many homes and gardens. She welcomes special commissions\, for in art\, just as in life\, anything is possible. \nIn addition to the vernissage on Saturday May 10\, Erin et Olga will be present at the gallery on the following days: \nErin: Friday May 2 from noon to 3:00 pm. / Friday May 9 and 16 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 / Saturday May 3 from noon to 3:00 / Saturday May 17 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm \nOlga: Sunday May 4\,11 and 18 from 1:00pm to 4:00 pm

SUMMARY:Behind the Curtain
DESCRIPTION:Wall Space Gallery is proud to present “Behind the Curtain\,” a group exhibition of paintings by Kelly Grace\, Andrew Beck\, Elle Chae\, and Jay Li. The artists in “Behind the Curtain” construct worlds through the collapse of linear time\, combining past eras or moments from personal archives in snapshots of layered imagery that capture the stretching and tidal current of time in motion. \nBeck\, Chae\, Grace and Li reveal the ways in which we are drawn to creating meaning through visual imagery\, and subsequently\, painting’s ability to question the solidity of the structures underlying that meaning. Each uses the malleable constructs of time\, cultural memory\, and personal experience to grasp the slippery threads of reality\, if only for a moment. \nOpening reception on Thursday\, May 1 from 5 – 7 PM

SUMMARY:Urban Perspectives By Maurice Dionne
DESCRIPTION:In Maurice Dionne’s latest art exhibition\, “Urban Perspectives\,” he invites viewers to explore the intricate interplay between its built environment and the life that pulses within it. Through a series of captivating cityscapes and streetscapes\, Dionne captures not just the architecture and buildings but also the very essence of urban existence—the stories that unfold before us in every corner\, every shadow. \nDionne’s watercolour paintings range from small intimate pieces to large expansive works. As you wander through his collection\, you’ll notice how each piece reflects a unique interpretation of the city’s persona. The light dances across surfaces while shadows create depth\, inviting us to feel and grasp the nuances of urban life. He meticulously depicts what he sees and experiences in his surroundings—transforming mundane moments into extraordinary discoveries. \nHis work allows us to see how beauty often resides in tiny details—the reflections on a puddle after rain or the architectural shapes that frame our daily journeys. The cultural patterns woven into our lifestyle and habits seamlessly adapt to new environments\, making them our own. In this way\, Dionne adds his colours to each scene\, infusing personal interpretations into familiar landscapes. \nAs we engage with these artworks\, we are reminded that urban spaces are not just physical locations but dynamic entities filled with stories waiting to be uncovered. Each brushstroke invites us to experience our cities anew—to appreciate their beauty and complexity while reflecting on our own perspectives within them. Through “Urban Perspectives\,” Maurice Dionne offers an invitation: step closer\, observe deeply\, and discover your own narrative amidst the vibrant tapestry of urban life.

SUMMARY:Migration Stories
DESCRIPTION:Six artists present their “stories” of migration\, reflecting the vast instinctual or altered journeys of animals and plants\, and forced human expulsion or immigration to places of hope and opportunity. The intertwining of these diverse migration stories reveals the growing complexity and urgency of species in motion. \nThe Migration artists are members of the Ottawa-Gatineau Printmakers Connective. Drawn together by the theme in 2023\, they have been exploring the political\, economic\, and ecological aspects of migration through the creation of 2- and 3-dimensional print-based art in a variety of printmaking techniques and materials.
