SUMMARY:Focus Series
DESCRIPTION:The Focus Series is an ongoing partnership between Library and Archives Canada and the National Gallery of Canada\, building on the rich collections of both institutions. \nFocus on the Métis — A103 Corridor and A103a\nA special collaboration that examines how early images of the Métis are often misidentified or not referenced at all. A careful look at details in historical art and photographs reveals that the Métis are often “hiding in plain sight.” \nPictorialism — A104a\nThe predominant aesthetic in photography throughout the first half of the twentieth century was pictorialism. \nWork is art/Art is work — A109a\nThis installation examines the various ways artists responded to the critical issues of the Depression era. \nPoints of View: Photography in the North — A111a\nDocumentary photographer Pamela Harris recorded community life in Taloyoak\, Nunavut (then Spence Bay\, NWT) for three months in 1972 and 1973 (published as Another Way of Being). Her photographs appear both casual and staged\, the resulting photographic sessions respectfully engaging two cultures and important considerations such as the agency and self-representation of Inuit.

SUMMARY:Elaf Selim at Constitution Square
DESCRIPTION: Elaf Selim is a fine artist known for luminous\, romantic paintings that explore femininity\, stillness\, and emotional refuge. A Canadian-Egyptian artist raised in Kuwait\, her work is shaped by a life lived across cultures\, landscapes\, and visual traditions. From an early age\, she was encouraged toward imagination and creative expression\, laying the foundation for a lifelong devotion to art.  \nHer painting practice is informed by training in classical oil painting and modern mixed-media techniques\, resulting in dreamlike works that balance structure with intuition. Rooted in Contemporary Romanticism\, Selim creates contemplative paintings of feminine figures\, gardens\, and delicate symbols. Her work offers a counterpoint to a culture of speed and anxiety by privileging slowness\, intimacy\, and light.  \nSelim’s imagery is immediately recognizable: feminine figures\, gardens\, and symbolic elements inhabiting a gentle\, luminous world just beyond waking. Working intuitively\, she draws from dreams\, memory\, meditation\, and nature. Her process includes layered oils\, fluid mark-making\, and hand-printed collage papers created from botanical materials gathered in her garden\, resulting in works that glow with depth and subtle texture.  \nShe creates in her home studio surrounded by gardens\, with the intention that her paintings become sanctuaries; offering collectors moments of rest\, intimacy\, and calm within a fast-paced world. Her work is represented by galleries\, exhibited in juried and curated shows\, and held in private collections\, resonating with collectors drawn to quiet beauty\, emotional presence\, and romantic stillness.

SUMMARY:Lenni Workman - NEW WORK
DESCRIPTION:Lenni Workman – Artist Statement \nMy work is a Request.\nA request to the viewer to look and look again\, don’t stop at superficial information.\nA request to notice how time and light transform your visual world.  Experience that a still-life or a room acts as a sun-dial.\nA request to see the alignment of the micro and macro worlds: how much a reflecting jar of water resembles the photographs we see of our galaxy.\nA request to see that we humans are part of this complex and fragile natural web of life.\nA request to concentrate and dream at the same time. Just for a moment\, hang your soul up on a bough with apple blossoms.\nA request to marvel at the power of a seed to put out roots and the power of a bud to flower. Allow this observed power to energize your efforts to conserve nature on our planet.\nLet the perfection of a moment of light summon the awe and love that it deserves. \nLenni Workman – Biography\nLenni Workman was born in Belleville\, Ont.\, and grew up on a farm just north of there. She studied Art History at Queen’s University\, graduated from St. Lawrence College\, Kingston\, in 1973\, and has been exhibiting paintings since then. Recipient of many awards and grants\, her works can be found in numerous public\, corporate\, and private collections throughout North America and Europe.

SUMMARY:Slip Terrace by Andrew Rucklidge
DESCRIPTION:April 9 to 26\, 2026 \nVernissage: Saturday April 11\, 1-4 pm \nGalerie Old Chelsea is thrilled to present a series of new paintings by Andrew Rucklidge\, an internationally recognized artist now living in Chelsea.  The exhibition captures the invisible yet deeply familiar forces that shape the earth over time as Rucklidge draws on processes such as erosion\, sedimentation\, metamorphism\, volcanic eruptions\, exposed faults\, and slipping terraces. \nAndrew Rucklidge’s practice is rooted in an exploration of the planet’s internal gestures—subtle\, powerful movements translated into paint through a deeply material and process-driven approach. Working with ancient and traditional media including egg tempera\, distemper\, watercolour\, handmade inks\, encaustic\, and sun-thickened linseed oil\, he constructs surfaces that echo the layered complexity of geological formations.

SUMMARY:Terry Brynaert - still*life
DESCRIPTION:Still*life is not a meditation on fruit bowls or porcelain vases; it proposes a dialogue between breath and silence\, between the pulse of existence and the hush of its surroundings. These paintings have emerged from the experience of living surrounded by nature—a life steeped in forests\, rivers\, and the quiet choreography of seasons. They are offered as invitations to pause\, to inhabit the stillness that nature offers without demanding\, and to recognize that stillness is never empty; it hums with life. \nFrom a distance\, the works may appear akin to realism\, as if reality itself were gently lifted from the forest floor and pinned to canvas. Yet\, as the viewer approaches\, the illusion fractures. What may have appeared serene reveals a riot of detail—brushstrokes that mimic the chaos of wind‑tossed leaves\, textures that echo the restless industry of bees buzzing about. This duality mirrors the experience of walking in the woods: the grandeur of treetops overhead\, and\, at your feet\, a single ant bearing the improbable weight of a pine needle. Stillness\, here\, is not stasis; it is a layered complexity\, a quiet teeming. \nIt is from this layered\, breathing stillness of the natural world that the studio’s own quiet emerges. In the act of painting\, thought slows to a near‑motionless drift\, settling into a trance‑like\, empty‑headed calm. The studio becomes a kind of interior forest—silent\, attentive\, stripped of urgency—where gesture arises without strain and decisions surface from a place beneath language. This meditative quiet is not separate from nature but echoes it\, becoming another form of listening. \nImmersion in nature is not an escape but a return. Silence is not absence\, but presence amplified. Each painting becomes a vessel for this paradox—where calm and vitality coexist\, where the infinite and the infinitesimal converse in colour and form. \nIn still*life\, the viewer is invited to slow down\, to look twice\, to surrender to the tension between order and disorder. These works are not so much representations; they are translations of experience\, carrying the scent of pine\, the flicker of shadow\, the pulse of unseen lives. They strive to remind that stillness is not the opposite of life—it is its most profound articulation.

SUMMARY:Trailer Trash - Randall Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of Randall Anderson in Trailer Trash\, a provocative exploration of high and low culture through personal and social lenses. Drawing on his upbringing in trailer parks\, early work as a diesel mechanic\, and extensive studies in critical theory and formalist painting\, Anderson creates work that challenges conventional ideas of art and cultural value. SUMMARY:Dimensions - Annie-France Bowker
DESCRIPTION:In Dimensions\, Annie-France Bowker explores form\, perception\, and imagined landscapes through handwoven wall hangings. Her work navigates the space between the tangible and the abstract\, where geometry meets intuition and structure gives way to otherworldly possibility. Weaving is a deeply meditative process for Bowker\, and in its rhythm\, she often finds herself transported into unfamiliar inner spaces. Each piece begins as a sketch and evolves on the loom into a kind of puzzle\, guided by both logic and instinct. Though the process is not always exact\, there is a moment when material\, gesture\, and intention align\, and each work finds its form.

SUMMARY:Nicole Allen | From the ground up
DESCRIPTION:Wall Space Gallery is proud to present From the Ground Up by Ottawa artist Nicole Allen. This exhibition reflects both a physical and emotional journey toward renewal and serves as a meditation on growth\, resilience\, and the transformative power of starting anew. Through her richly layered florals and botanical imagery\, Allen explores the delicate interplay between vulnerability and strength\, much like blossoms reaching toward the light after a long winter. \nBorn in Oakville\, Ontario\, Allen developed an early appreciation for painting the Canadian landscape through her father. The artist holds an undergraduate degree in Art History from Queen’s University\, and an honours diploma in Applied Museum Studies from Algonquin College. Over the years\, Allen has consistently developed her painting and figurative skills through her studies at the Ottawa School of Art and local art groups. Since beginning to exhibit her work in 2010\, Allen has shown throughout the Ottawa region and now paints full-time from her studio as a member of the Loft Artists Collective. Her work is held in private collections across Canada\, the United States\, and Europe.

SUMMARY:Kaitlin Johnson | Falling Back into Bloom
DESCRIPTION:Wall Space Gallery is delighted to present Falling Back into Bloom by Kaitlin Johnson. In this new body of work\, Johnson revisits florals with a fresh perspective and a sense of freedom. Blending abstraction with representation\, she approaches still life as a dynamic space for experimentation\, where colour\, pattern\, and form can shift\, overlap\, and evolve. Each painting carries an air of mystery\, encouraging viewers to take their time and discover their own personal connections. At its essence\, the exhibition embodies openness\, instinctual exploration\, and the joy found in the creative process. \nBorn in Toronto\, Kaitlin Johnson currently lives and works in Oakville\, ON. Johnson works primarily in acrylics on canvas\, creating dramatic abstract paintings that inspire joy. After completing her B.A. in Visual Arts from The University of Western Ontario\, the artist obtained her art teaching degree from the University of Wollongong in NSW\, Australia. Johnson’s artistic practice focuses on teasing out the beauty and raw emotion of each inspiration\, drawing on rhythms and unique combinations of colour gathered through travel\, nature\, and anything else that catches her eye.

SUMMARY:Crystal Beshara | WILD HEART
DESCRIPTION:Wall Space Gallery is pleased to exhibit WILD HEART Tapestries: Portraits from the Forest & Garden\, featuring new works by Crystal Beshara. This collection explores an allegorical space where fine art and narrative illustration intertwine. Beshara’s compositions\, built like textiles of dense foliage and radiant light\, create a tactile sense of depth. Rooted in the elegance of Art Nouveau yet distinctly contemporary\, WILD HEART Tapestries offers a poetic meditation on the mystery of both forest and garden. \nCrystal Beshara is a Canadian contemporary realist painter and proud two-time winner of the prestigious Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation prize. A self-taught realist\, her childhood was spent drawing and observing life on a farm and the quiet\, connective world in which she lived. Even after moving to Ottawa to receive her BFA in Studio\, Crystal’s strong rural narrative continued to play a huge role in her paintings. Her style is a juxtaposition of two worlds; her love of realism collides with her post-secondary studies creating expressive and emotionally charged works of art that have been collected by corporate\, private\, and commercial clients.

SUMMARY:Slip Terrace by Andrew Rucklidge - Vernissage
DESCRIPTION:Galerie Old Chelsea is thrilled to present a series of new paintings by Andrew Rucklidge\, an internationally recognized artist now living in Chelsea.

SUMMARY:Terry Brynaert still*life - Vernissage

SUMMARY:'A Murmuration of Whispers' by Reid McLachlan
DESCRIPTION:Galerie Old Chelsea is thrilled to welcome Chelsea’s Reid McLachlan with “A Murmuration of Whispers”\, a compelling new body of work that offers a rare glimpse into his creative process. McLachlan’s paintings begin not with images\, but with words. Whether fragments\, phrases\, or complex thoughts\, his visual language emerges from an incessant\, shape-shifting murmuration of internal dialogue.  “A Murmuration of Whispers” is a conspiracy of letters\, words\, and symbols that whir overhead\, swooping and diving\, mutating into ephemeral hopes\, fugitive worries\, and tenacious regrets. \nEach piece originates in a chaotic blur of whispered text—amorphous as smoke in the breeze—twisting and turning until form begins to coalesce. From this shifting terrain\, visual narratives surface: solitary figures drift through silent\, indifferent landscapes\, searching for connection. Along their journeys\, they encounter enigmatic forces—trickster ravens\, counterfeit constellations\, unreliable Madonnas\, and other meddlesome presences—that guide or mislead them in equal measure. These figures\, suspended in a timeless world of longing and regret\, seek love and redemption while navigating a delicate balance between the conscious and subconscious. \nMcLachlan’s paintings reveal deeply personal reflections on life\, love\, and loss\, while resonating with a broader\, shared humanity. \nReid McLachlan studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design\, completing his final year at the OCAD campus in Florence\, Italy. He graduated with Honours winning multiple awards in 1987. For over 35 years\, he has lived and worked full-time in Chelsea\, where he remains an active member of the Chelsea/Wakefield artistic community. His work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions at both public and private galleries\, including Galerie Montcalm\, Art-Image\, Karsh-Masson\, l’Imagier\, the Ottawa School of Art\, Cube Gallery\, and La Petite Mort.

SUMMARY:Tim desClouds + Pat Durr
DESCRIPTION:Tim desClouds – Artist Statement \nIn this most recent body of works I have pared down my working process to a celebration of the tradition of drawing and painting leaving behind the many sculptural embellishments included in earlier works. The content of the works flow forward from my previous 2022 exhibition\, “Somewhere Between Mother Goose and Foucault”\, and 2024 exhibition “Heavy Rhymes\, Lightly Tossed” \nI have worked new iconography into my pieces. By referencing my love for philosophy and the many quirky nursery rhymes I have read to my daughter and more recently my grandsons\, I have found a whimsical middle ground for my works. Ironically many of the concepts within these stories parallel and overlap each other. As a lifelong student of media\, culture\, and philosophy\, playing with these narratives has allowed me to inject newfound interest and excitement into the art process and final products. \nThese works are materializations of my everyday life— thoughts\, feelings\, actions\, and interactions—and they help to weave a landscape of our shared existence. I imagine each work as a physical space where the viewer may stop in\, think\, discuss\, and depart freely. The viewer is given the opportunity to invest interest and imagination\, and to make what had once appeared incomprehensible\, comprehensible and personally meaningful. \nAbout the Artist \nTim desClouds is an Ottawa-based artist\, born in Montreal and raised in Ottawa. He has been an educator\, and arts advocate for well over 40 years. He has served on both the Ottawa Art Gallery and Gallery Saw Board of Directors. Tim retired from a 30 year teaching career at Canterbury High School Regional Programme for the Arts within the district of the Ottawa – Carleton Board of Education. He has created numerous public art works throughout Ontario and Quebec\, and his work has been acquired for numerous corporate\, private and government collections throughout North America. \nPat Durr – Artist Statement \nIt has been my good fortune to be an active practicing artist for over 45 years.  During that time I have tried to positively contribute to the world I live and work in by giving workshops and lectures in Ottawa and across the country. \nMy current artworks are concerned with the worlds which surround me\, both the natural and the urban – industrial. These landscapes have consistently been a reference source for my art. To this end\, I have accumulated cast-off objects from my surroundings – the artistic\, natural\, and industrial waste which I then reference in my artworks to probe the relationship between our actions and the natural world. \nMy artworks allude to often problematic and unfortunate negative interfaces with our environment.  Yet\, also central to my art is a celebration of the complexity of life\, as well as an exploration of this interplay between life and its complexities.  Most of my recently created pieces reflect my response to the pandemic and to my positive hopes for the future.  While the imagery is primarily abstract\, it is often infused with hints of recognizable objects and can echo images found in my earlier prints and paintings. \nI feel that the cyclic aspects of growth\, extinction and renewal are symbolic of my own often chaotic experience of existence. \nAbout the Artist \nDurr has been an active practicioner of art for over 45 years. During those years\, she has tried to positively contribute to the world she lives and works in by giving workshops and lectures across the country\, and by working with national organizations and advising the federal government on issues that directly affect Canadian visual artists. \nDurr’s solo exhibitions of paintings\, drawings and prints have been shown in public and private galleries and artist-run centers across Canada and the United States.  Her artworks are in public\, private and corporate collections in Canada\, United States\, Australia\, England\, Cuba and Israel.  She has received numerous awards and grants through-out her long career.

SUMMARY:Kelly Grace | Depth of Field
DESCRIPTION:Wall Space Gallery presents Depth of Field\, a solo exhibition by Kelly Grace that considers the act of looking as a reciprocal exchange. Moving between screen\, audience\, and painted surface\, the work explores how attention circulates\, with viewing becoming a shared and shifting experience. \nKelly Grace was born in Toronto in the 70s and raised in the rural area of Stouffville\, Ontario. Growing up\, Grace was surrounded by creative influences; her paternal grandparents were traveling puppeteers in the local fair and carnival circuit in California in the 1950’s\, and her grandfather was also a clown and a painter. Both her parents had artistic and creative inclinations and encouraged her to pursue her arts education. Grace continued her arts training at Sheridan College in Oakville\, Ontario where she studied Interpretive Illustration for 3 years. Although she never pursued an illustration career\, it was at this school that she developed her style of painting with acrylics. In her final year at Sheridan College\, a project focused on ‘phobias’ prompted her to examine the “fear of clowns”. Despite the fact that she isn’t actually afraid of clowns\, the project allowed her to develop her unique style.

SUMMARY:'In Praise of Misbehaviour' by Catherine Gutsche
DESCRIPTION:New Painting Exhibition Explores the Beauty of Defying Expectation. \nA new exhibition of abstract painting explores the beauty of resisting expectations. Through layered surfaces\, assertive colour\, and gestures that challenge conventional harmony\, the works embrace disruption as a deliberate artistic strategy. Rather than seeking perfect order\, the paintings celebrate the vitality that emerges when structure is pushed\, tested\, and allowed to stand apart.
