The Oldest Known Tablet of the Ten Commandments Sells for $5 Million at Sotheby’s

A two-foot-long marble tablet inscribed with the Ten Commandments in Paleo-Hebrew script sold for $5 million at Sotheby’s. Dating from 300 to 800 CE, it is the only complete example of its kind. Discovered in 1913 during railroad excavations in Palestine, it was used as a paving stone until Jacob Kaplan uncovered it in 1943.

The tablet changed hands several times, eventually purchased by Mitchell S. Cappell in 2016 for $850,000. While its authenticity has been contested, the text is similar to known Biblical verses, though it omits the third commandment and references worship on Mount Gerizim, a site sacred to Samaritans.

After intense bidding, the tablet was acquired by an anonymous buyer, who plans to donate it to an Israeli institution.
